No. 1 Maryland Field Hockey Handles Quinnipiac, 4-0
Sept. 26, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Top-ranked Maryland field hockey bounced back from a disappointing loss at Wake Forest and defeated Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Junior All-American Lauren Powley scored the game-winning goal and had an assist to pace the Terp offense.
Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) picked up a rebound after a penalty corner and hit it in for the eventual game winner just 5:02 into the game.
Maryland (10-1), who has not been outshot by an opponent since the Terps' final game of the 2002 campaign, had 37 attempts versus Quinnipiac (2-7), led by Powley who had career-high 10 attempts.
Sophomore All-American Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) cushioned the Terp advantage, dribbling into the scoring circle and smacking the ball by Bobcat goalkeeper Erin McKay in the 16th minute.
A minute into the second half, Quinnipiac drew a penalty corner and its only offensive threat of the game. But the Maryland defense broke up the play and did not allow the Bobcats to get a shot. It is the third time this season a Maryland opponent has been limited to zero shots for the contest.
In the 42nd minute, junior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) tacked on another goal redirecting Powley's shot on the penalty corner, making the score 3-0. Junior Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.) scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute, knocking in her own rebounded shot.
Freshman Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) earned the first start of her career, her first shutout and the team's sixth of the season. QU's Erin McKay was one save off her personal best, making 23 stops.
Maryland returns to ACC action next weekend traveling to Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 2 for a 1 p.m. game. The Terps return to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex to face local rival American who is currently ranked 10th in the nation.
