No. 4 Maryland Defeats Towson, 10-1, In Field Hockey

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) and freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored three goal each and junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) was credited with a career-high four assists as No. 4 Maryland defeated Towson University, 10-1, in collegiate field hockey at the Artificial Turf Facility here tonight.
Maryland improved to 5-1 with the victory while Towson fell to 1-4. Maryland is ranked No. 4 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.
Tagliente recorded a season-high eight points (three goals and two assists) to bring her career point total to 101. She became only the eighth player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau. Tagliente is now tied for seventh all-time is total scoring with 101 points. She scored one goal in the first half and two in the second and now has 40 career goals.
Sophomore Kristy Plachinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) scored what proved to be the game-winner with only 39 seconds elapsed in the game. It was Palchinsky's second career goal.
Messimer scored her first career hat trick with one goal in the first half and two in the second. She entered the game with one goal in her first five collegiate games.
Sophomore midfielder Joann Engestrom scored Towson's only goal of the night. She scored with 7:56 remaining n the first half to bring the Tigers to within four at 5-1.
Maryland's starting goalie Zoe Ehrlich (Montclair, N.J.) and Ashley Hohnstine (Oakton, Va.) combined to make one save in gaining the Terps fourth shutout of the season. Towson's Betsy Crossman (Shippensburg, Pa.) was credited with 14 saves.
