No. 3 Field Hockey Thumps Rutgers, 7-0, in First Game at the New Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex
Sept. 13, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The #3 Maryland field hockey team opened its home schedule and the brand new Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex with a 7-0 thumping of Rutgers in the Terrapin Invitational. Sophomore Amber McQuillan (Coopersburg, Pa.) recorded the Terps' first-ever goal at the state-of-the-art facility and had a career-high two for the game. Junior co-captain Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) also notched two goals in the contest, tying a career best.
The Rutgers (3-3) attack was no match for the Maryland (5-0) defense who did not surrender a shot attempt nor a penalty corner to the Scarlet Knights for the game. The Terps have allowed just 10 shots and one goal in five games this season. The last time UM did not allow shot or a penalty corner was almost a year ago on Sept. 15, 2002 in the 1-0 win over Boston University. The Maryland attack has also outscored its opponents 30-1 this season.
McQuillian notched her first goal of the season in the 18th minute scoring on a pass from freshman defender Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) opening the flood gates and giving the Terps a 1-0 lead.
Maryland went ahead 3-0 on back-to-back penalty corner goals in the 24th and 31st minutes. Infante's tally in the 24th minute extended her scoring streak to five games.
The Terps took an overwhelming 4-0 advantage into the break as junior Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.) tipped in a high ball from classmate Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.), scoring her first goal of the year.
Maryland wasted no time in the second half. From the starting whistle at midfield, Barbieri ran the ball the all the way down the left side of the field to the baseline and scored 19 seconds into the period to add to the UM lead, 5-0.
The Terps tacked on two more goals on scores from McQuillan and Silvetti to round out the scoring.
Maryland is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. to close out the Terrapin Invitational against Pacific. Prior to that match, the Scarlet Knights and American square off at 12 p.m.
