No. 1 Terps Field Hockey Loses First of Season, 5-3
Sept. 6, 1999 NORFOLK, Va. - Despite two goals by junior Carolina Walter and two assists from junior Carla Tagliente, No. 1 Maryland lost to No. 2 Old Dominion, 5-3, in field hockey Monday afternoon at Foreman Field. The No. 2 Lady Monarchs improve to 3-0 overall (2-0 CAA) while the Terps fell to 2-1 overall (0-0 ACC). Maryland was led by Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) who netted a pair of goals and All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, NY) who chipped in with two assists. Junior co-captain Marina DiGiacomo and freshman Marjolijn van der Sommen led the way with two goals apiece for Old Dominion. Virginia Beach native Laura Steadman chipped in with a goal and an assist. Both Kim Miller and Ashleigh Miller had a pair of assists for the winners. Maryland, picked No. 1in the nation by Sports Illustrated for Women, will play Boston Un iversity Friday and then take on Massachusetts Sunday afternoon. Both games will be played in Amherst, Mass.
