Field Hockey Wins in Double Overtime
Sept. 5, 1998 ST. LOUIS - Sophomore midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored on a penalty stroke with 10:00 left in the second sudden-death overtime, leading sixth-ranked Maryland (2-0) to a dramatic 2-1 victory over No. 11 Michigan (1-1) in the first day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in St. Louis today. Tagliente's penalty stroke was set up by sophomore forward Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), who was in on a breakaway, only to be tripped up from behind. Smith scored Maryland's other goal with 18:00 left in the first half (which was unassisted) but Michigan's Keli Gannon tied the score on a penalty stroke with 5:00 left in the first half. Sophomore goalie Angela Platt (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) made 15 saves for Maryland, including eight alone in the first sudden-death overtime. Also playing a strong defensive game for Maryland were sophomore backs Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), who had two defensive saves and Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia). Maryland plays Michigan State (2-0) on Monday at 3 p.m. E.S.T. in the final day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. GAME SUMMARY
