Terrapins Top Northwestern, 3-1, To Open Season
Aug. 31, 2002
CHICAGO - The new-look Maryland field hockey squad (1-0) began the 2002 season on the right foot, topping Northwestern (0-1) in its season-opener in Chicago, 3-1. Sophomore forward Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.), last season's ACC Rookie of the Year, punched in the game-winner midway through the second half and added an insurance goal in the game's waning moments as the Terps opened the new year and their Chicago road trip in style.
"We had six new players in the starting lineup, and I'm pleased with how the new squad played. We had several opportunities in the first half and made some good adjustments at halftime," said 2001 ACC and NFHCA National Coach of the Year Missy Meharg. "I think we have the quality athleticism and endurance to be a contender."
After a scoreless opening period, senior All-America midfielder Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) got the Terps on the scoreboard in the 44th minute in the second half. Sophomore Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) and senior Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) combined for assists on the play. Barbieri scored what would eventually be the game winner on an assist from British newcomer Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) in the 55th minute, and then notched her second goal of the game from German rookie Katrin Rummer (Karlsruhe, Germany) after the Wildcats' Abby Alley tallied a goal for NU.
The Terps have now won their last six season-openers, and are 10-1 in season-openers since 1992.
Maryland continues its Chicago road trip with a game against New Hampshire at Northwestern's Lakeside Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The contest is a rematch of the 2000 NCAA First Round game that the Terps won 9-1. The Terrapins' home opener will be against Drexel on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Admission to all Terrapin home games is free.
