Field Hockey Terps Win Third-Straight In California
Aug. 29, 2006
BERKLEY, Calif. - Freshman Alexis Pappas' goal less than five minutes into the game held up for the game-winner and the No. 1 Maryland field hockey team dominated California, 5-0, in Berkley, Calif. The Terps close out their three-game road trip with its third-straight victory, while reigning national player of the year Paula Infante becomes the ninth Terrapin in school history to score 50 career goals.
Making the second start of her career and appearing in her third game in a Maryland uniform, Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa.) got things going for the Terrapins (3-0) early on, scoring her first-career goal at 4:12.
The Terrapin offense was dominant, once again, scoring at least four goals for the third-consecutive game after posting a 6-0 victory over Pacific and a 4-1 win over Stanford over the weekend. It was also executing almost perfectly, executing on three of its six penalty corners.
Seniors Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile), the reigning national player of the year, and Emily Trycinski (Nazareth, Pa.) extended their scoring streaks, contributing at least a goal in each of the team's first three contests of the season. Career goal No. 50 for Infante came at the 13:04 mark, moving her into 10th-place all-time on Maryland's all-time career goals list.
Sophomore defender Susie Rowe (London England) sealed the deal, scoring both of the team's goals in the second half on penalty corners. Junior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) and senior Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) each had three assists apiece, all on penalty corners.
Rowe and the rest of the defensive was just as dominant over California (2-1). The Bears were allowed just one shot.
The reigning national champions play at home for the first time when they host fourth-ranked Old Dominion at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, Sept. 2. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. Parking is free until noon. After noon, there is a $10 charge for parking due to the football game vs. William & Mary.
