Aug. 29, 2005
COLUMBUS, Ohio - With no time remaining, Maryland's Jackie Ciconte converted on a penalty corner to lift the Terrapin field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Monday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The Terps improve to 2-0 on the season, after trailing for most of the game.
The first half was scoreless until the Buckeyes (0-1) finally broke through to take a 1-0 lead. OSU was awarded a penalty corner and Curlyne Wynn knocked in the ball for the score at the end of the period.
Maryland put pressure on the Ohio State defense, which was playing its opening game of the season, outshooting OSU, 8-2 in the second half. In the 62nd minute, a well-executed penalty corner tied the score, with Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) punching through for the score. Senior Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) were credited with assists.
The teams battled down to the final minute when Maryland was awarded its fifth and final penalty corner of the game. With no time left on the clock, freshman Susie Rowe (London, England) took the shot off the corner and Ciconte deflected in her second goal in less than nine minutes to give the Terps the win.
Buckeyes were outshot by the Terps, 11-3, for the game. Sophomore Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) made her first start of the season.
Maryland, who has swept two Big Ten teams on its three-game road swing, remains in Columbus, Ohio, to play Ohio University tomorrow, Tuesday, August 30 at 12 p.m.
