EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 1-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its season opener Friday afternoon against Ohio, 3-0, at Northwestern University, where it is competing in the Wildcat Classic this weekend.
The defending national champions were led in scoring by senior Emma Thomas, who scored off a penalty corner with 6:48 left in the first half off assists from senior Ameliet Rischen and junior Katie O'Donnell. The Terps' second score came late in the first half by O'Donnell, who finished a rebound off of a blocked shot. Thomas struck again later in the second half with assists from senior Alexis Pappas and O'Donnell off of another penalty corner.
The Terrapins fought off Ohio's late tries at scoring to keep the shut-out win. Senior goalkeeper Alicia Grater had three saves in nearly 67 minutes.
"I was very pleased with our deep defense," said Terrapins head coach Missy Meharg."They have really talented players, Ohio does. They are a strong team to get a shut-out against. It took us a little while to settle in, but once we did we were able to execute quite well. We had very strong defensive performances from Pappas, Brianna Davies and Grater."
"Overall, the coaching staff is very pleased by our start. Ohio is very, very strong, very physically fit and very mentally powerful."
Four Maryland freshmen saw playing time and earned great experience in their collegiate debut.
The Terps will face off against Boston University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
