EVANSTON, Ill. - Maryland's Paula Infante tallied the game-winning goal in the second half, leading the Terp field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Northwestern in its season opener. Five different Terrapins scored in the win.
Northwestern (0-1) took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the first half on a penalty corner. But the Terps (1-0) battled to even the score as senior All-American Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) knocked in a rebound off a penalty corner.
Just before the end of the first half, senior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) gave the Terps their first lead of the game with less than a minute to play in the period.
The Wildcats, however, knotted the game, 2-2, on a Meghan Small tally. But a penalty stroke in the 61st minute shifted the momentum and the Terps scored three goals in four minutes to put the game away. An All-American last season, Infante (Santiago, Chile) converted on the penalty stroke, to put Maryland ahead, 3-2. Freshman Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa.) finished off a shot on a pass from senior Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.). Powley connected with senior Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) on a penalty corner to score the game's final goal.
Maryland peppered Northwestern's goalie Sherri Anne Nyberg with 25 goals, but made 14 saves to keep the Wildcats in the game. The Terps also dominated on the penalty corners, earning 15 corners, while Northwestern had just one.
