PHILADELPHIA - The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its 15th straight season opener Friday, as it beat No. 19 Boston University, 3-1, in Temple University's Conference Cup tournament. Senior captain Jemma Buckley (Perth, Australia/John XXIII College) led the Terps (1-0) with all three of Maryland's goals and her third career hat trick.
The game was scoreless for most of the first half, until Buckley scored twice within the 33rd minute to put Maryland on top 2-0 at the break. For the first goal, she scored on shot off of a reverse shot on a penalty corner and 24 seconds later, she dribbled past Boston University's keeper for a second goal.
The Terriers (0-1) cut the Terps' lead in half in the 48th minute as Rachael White scored off of an assist by Leslie Zules.
For the Terrapins' final goal, Buckley struck off of another penalty corner with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game. Freshman Katie Gerzabek (Springfield, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) inserted on the play and junior Colleen Gulick (Spring City, Pa./The Hill School) stopped, as both earned assists.
The Terps outshot the Terriers 12-6, including 10-5 in the first half. Maryland also had nine penalty corners to Boston University's one.
Maryland goalkeeper Melissa Vassalotti (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) notched four saves, while Gulick added a defensive save. Terriers' goalkeeper Jess Maroney had five saves.
Maryland, who was ranked No. 1 in Tuesday's Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason poll, is scheduled to play tournament-host Temple (1-0) Monday at 3:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m., but it has been rescheduled to Monday because of the impending weather.
