Maryland Competitive Cheer Wins Second At National Championships

April 8, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Maryland Competitive Cheer squad placed second at the National Cheerleading Associations National Championships with a score of 9.01 (out of 10.00). Louisville, the five time national champions, edged the Terps with a score of 9.20 to take first.

The squad improved its score from yesterday's preliminary round from 8.69. Today's performance was held outside on the edge of the beach in Daytona Beach, Fla.

"It is amazing to see where we have come in only two years," said coach Lura Fleece. "The team has focused this year on adding more difficulty in tumbling and stunts, as well as performing an innovative Broadway style routine."

The team has quickly ascended as one of the most accomplished in the country in just its second season. The Terps boast eight first place wins this season and awards for tumbling and choreography.

Today's competition will be televised on CBS later this month.
