Lynetta Kizer Named ACC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Jan. 19, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman center Lynetta Kizer was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Rookie of the Week, it was announced Monday. Kizer, who was the conference's Preseason Rookie of the Year, earned the distinction for the first time thanks to two double-doubles in three ACC games last week.
Kizer put up double-doubles in contests at No. 4/10 Duke and against Virginia Tech and now has six in her freshman campaign to lead the team this season. The rookie from Woodbridge, Va., averaged 13.0 points per game and 11.0 boards per contest for the week.
Kizer led the team in rebounding at Duke with 13 and tied for the most boards of any player against Virginia Tech with 12. She was the only Terrapin to make her way to the free throw line against Duke, and returned a team-best 10 times against Virginia Tech, establishing a low-post presence for the team.
Kizer reached double figure scoring in all three contests of the week. She put up 12 points against both Duke and Virginia Tech and poured in 15 at Clemson on Thursday evening. Maryland defeated both Clemson and Virginia Tech thanks to Kizer's performances, and nearly pulled off the upset of Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, as well.
Florida State's Jacinta Monroe was named the conference's Player of the Week.
After a week-long stretch on the road which took them to Duke and Clemson, Maryland now will enjoy a week off as they prepare to take on No. 2/2 North Carolina on Sunday, January 25. Tip-off between the Terps and Tar Heels is set for 7 p.m. Fans can tune in to watch the game on ESPN2, and can hear it on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network (flagship stations 105.7 FM and 1300 AM) or WMUC Sports at www.WMUCSports.com.
