Jan. 30, 1998 Maryland Wins Over No. 13 Duke 54-53 Friday NightBoxscoreCOLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Sonia Chase hit a 15-footer with 5.3 seconds left to lift Maryland past No. 13 Duke 54-53 Friday night, snapping the Blue Devils' four-game winning streak. Duke led 53-52 before the Blue Devils' Hilary Howard missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 12 seconds left. Maryland got the rebound, called a timeout and worked the ball to Chase, who sank a jumper from the left side. Howard scored 13 points and Payton Black had 12 for Duke (14-6, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which shot 67 percent in the first half but scored only 15 points in the final 20 minutes. Chase had 18 points on 9-for-13 shooting for Maryland (12-8, 5-5). The Terrapins led only twice - at 15-14 and after Chase's game-winning shot. Maryland is 15-3 against Duke at home. The Blue Devils had won their previous four games by an average of 20 points, but in this one they never could shake the pesky Terrapins despite leading by 11 in the first half and by eight with 17:46 to go. Maryland used a putback by Branka Bogunovic to close to 42-38 with 14:48 left, and minutes later Stephanie Cross scored two straight baskets and Chase made a twisting layup to tie it at 46 with 8:40 to go. A 3-pointer by Nicole Erickson and a drive by Howard put Duke up by five, but Maryland again came back to set the stage for the exciting finish. Duke went 16-for-24 in the first half and used two big runs to take a 38-30 lead. After Maryland got the game's first basket, the Blue Devils got six points from Peppi Brown in a 12-0 spurt. It was 17-all before Black made two straight field goals to spark an 11-0 Duke run.
