Nov. 19, 1997 Terps Drop Home Opener to Loyola, 57-50COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland women's basketball team lost its home opening game tonight, 57-50, to the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds. For Loyola, the victory was its first of the season. The Terps fell behind, 17-8, at the 7:35 mark of the first period, but rallied for a 16-2 run before half-time, where they led 24-19. Maryland built the lead to as many as six points with 10:38 remaining in the game, when Loyola took over by going on a 22-6 run and led by 10 with 1:02 remaining. Maryland cut the lead to three with 24.4 seconds remaining, but could get no closer. Senior guard Sonia Chase paced the Terps with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Loyola was led by Mary Anne Kirsch, who had 13 points and six rebounds. Maryland falls to 0-2 on the season and opens its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 22, against Georgia Tech (1-1) at Cole Field House. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
