Postgame notes following Maryland's 59-44 win over Navy in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Team Records and Series Notes
Maryland advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament to take on the winner of No. 7 Louisville/No. 10 Michigan State Monday in College Park.
Navy finished the season with an 18-14 overall mark. The Mids graduate just one player off this year's squad - senior guard Erin Edwards.
Today's matchup was the first meeting ever between the Terrapins and the Midshipmen in the 40th and 36th seasons for the programs, respectively.
Maryland Team Game Notes
Starting Lineup: Tianna Hawkins, Alyssa Thomas, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy, Anjale Barrett.
Tqo Terps reached double figures against the Midshipmen: Alyssa Thomas (17) and Lauren Mincy (14).
Rebounding Edge: Maryland outrebounded Navy 46-33 leading to 11 second chance points for the Terps.
Hitting Shots: The Terps shot 40% from beyond the arc and 78.6% from the charity stripe to help guide Maryland to a first-round NCAA tournament win.
Maryland Individual Game Notes
With her 17 points, sophomore Alyssa Thomas became the second-fastest Terp to reach the 1,000 career point mark, behind Crystal Langhorne. Thomas now sits at 1,007 point for her career.
Sophomore Lauren Mincy also scored in double figures for the Terrapins, notching 14 points to go along with six rebounds.
Senior guard Kim Rodgers was efficient for Maryland in her 13 minutes, hitting both of her shot attempts--two 3-pointers--and grabbing four rebounds.
Totally Thomas: Sophomore Alyssa Thomas recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards, good for best on the team in both categories. She also dished out four assists and had just one turnover.
Navy Team Game Notes
Starting Lineup: Audrey Bauer, Jade Geif, Alix Membreno, Erin Edwards, Kara Pollinger.
Starting Strong: Navy jumped out to an early 8-4 lead on Maryland and stuck with the No. 2-seeded Terrapins for much of the first half--tying the game at 17 a piece with just under seven minutes to play.
Ball Contol: The Mids turned the ball over just three times in the first half to help keep pace with the Terrapins. Their +1 turnover edge was above their season average.
Navy Individual Game Notes
Sophomore forward Jade Geif paced the Mids with 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. Geif also grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Sophomore guard Alix Membreno was second on the team with seven points and five rebounds.
