Maryland women’s basketball became a true “family affair” when Marsha Frese joined the Terrapin staff as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Frese, the sister of head coach, Brenda Frese, was hired in April of 2002 and coordinates all recruiting efforts for Terrapin women’s basketball. The sisters not only grew up and won a state high school championship together, they’ve also coached together at two previous stops: Minnesota and Ball State.

During her stay with the Golden Gophers, Frese helped key one of the biggest turnarounds in women’s NCAA history. Despite Minnesota’s 8-20 record the previous season, Frese coordinated efforts that brought in the No. 15 recruiting class according to Blue Star Basketball, including the state’s Ms. Minnesota Basketball. Frese also worked with the perimeter players at Minnesota, including third-team All-American and Big Ten player of the year, Lindsay Whalen. The Golden Gophers finished the 2001-02 season ranked seventh nationally in scoring and advanced to the second round of the 2002 NCAA tournament.

Frese began her coaching career at Ball State where she served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Cardinals from 1999-2001. She recruited MAC freshman of the year Johna Goff and coached 2000-01 MAC player of the year Ta’Mara Bowie. Frese guided the Cardinals’ perimeter efforts to a rank of eighth nationally, averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game.

Before beginning her coaching career, Frese was the first female on-air sports anchor for KALB-TV in Alexandria, La., from 1996-99. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Rice University in 1995 and was a four-year letterwinner for the Owls. In high school, Frese was named 1990 Miss Iowa Basketball by USA Today and Gatorade Circle of Champions. She still ranks among Iowa’s all-time leading high school scorers in the five-player game.

Frese exchanged marital vows with Jason Elliott on June 1, 2002. The couple resides in Columbia, Md.
