Student Welfare and Career Development: Programs Programs
The University of Maryland offers programming to its student-athletes in order to enrich their experiences during attendance at the University. Joining the Athletic Department in these efforts are Academic Services for Student-Athletes (Academic Services), Student Affairs, University of Maryland Sports Medicine, the University of Maryland Alumni Association, and the M Club.

Student Welfare and Career Development (SWCD) offers various programs and speakers centering on topics of interest to our student-athletes. The program is part of the NCAA/Student-Athlete Affairs life skills philosophy. Programs are selected through the following methods:

An annual needs assessment completed by student-athletes indicating which topics and careers are currently of greatest interest to them.
An annual program evaluation completed by coaches, staff, academic counselors, trainers, student-athletes and administrators.
Programs suggested by our life skills staff, student-athletes, trainers, coaches, administrators and student-athletes.
Influence from current events in the world, nation, and/or in our own community and campus.

Career Development
In collaboration with the University of Maryland's Career Center, the SWCD Program provides career and graduate school preparation services to student-athletes.

Programs and services include:
· A one-credit course designed for student-athletes
· Career networking events
· Career development topical events
· Opportunities for mock interview rehearsals and consulting
· Resume development
· Internship and job search strategies
· One on one career counseling and referral

Community Service
SWCD is dedicated to engaging student-athletes in experiences that involve the University, local and national communities through service, and exposes them to diverse groups and cultures while increasing awareness about vulnerable populations. University of Maryland student-athletes take pride in giving back and being involved in the community. During the academic year, University of Maryland student-athletes completed over 2,500 hours of community service.

· Casey Cares Foundation

Financial Education
For many college students, personal finance is a new responsibility. The SWCD Program is available to assist student athletes with developing good financial practices and habits.

Programs and services include:
· Financial Education I: Personal Budgeting Basics and tips
· Financial Education II: Life Beyond College- Your Financial Future

Health and Wellness
SWCD encourages student-athletes to lead a healthy life style. The SWCD Program collaborates with services here at the University of Maryland Health Center as well as the nation's top professionals in their field.

Programs and services include:
· Personal health and behaviors
· Alcohol and drug abuse prevention education
· Sexual Assault and Rape Prevention education
· Personal and campus safety

Personal Development
The SWCD Program is designed to develop the whole student-athlete for success in life beyond the field of play.

Programs and services include:
· Branding workshops
· How to network
· Etiquette dinners
