Virginia Sweeps the Competition at Maryland Cross Country InvitationalCOLLEGE PARK, MD -- Although eight universities and colleges came out to compete a meet hosted by the University of Maryland, it was clearly Virginia's day in both races. The women dominated the competition, with five runners taking the top seven spots int he 5K race. Wendy Riker of Virginia claimed first with a time of 18:05. 27. Rhode Island's Heather Whitmore was not far behind for second place. Cheryl Twomey and Jennifer Ownes, both of Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky's Sarah Blossom rounded ou the Top 5. Eastern Kentucky claimed second overall for the women, followed by Duke, Rhode Island, and Maryland. The Virginia men won overall, but Eastern Kentucky's David Kahata took first place in the men's 8K with a time of 25:25.96. Ray Weeden of Virginia was second, Eastern Kentucky's Mohamed Musse took third, and Robert Thiele of Virginia and Eastern Kentucky's Daniel Koech followed.
