The men's cross country team finished 10th at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in Tallahassee, Fla. on Monday.
It was the first taste of ACC Championship competition for every Terp runner but one (junior Matt Sanders). For the young Maryland squad, the meet was a valuable chance to gain experience as it heads into the final two competitions of the season.
Freshman Tyler McCandless continued to stand out for the Terps, finishing 46th overall in 25:14.70. The Allentown, Pa. native has paced Maryland in all five races this year. Next for the Terps was Sanders, who crossed in 25:34.50 (59th place). Freshman Zach Martinez finished in 62nd with a mark of 25:39.0 while classmate Jake Travers came in 68th overall in 25:47.20. Freshmen Josh Davis and Richie Booth placed 83rd and 88th, respectively. Junior Pat Reaves followed right behind in 89th place (26:54.70). Closing out the day for Maryland was senior Dan Ryan who placed 92nd in 27:29.30.
"We were expecting a 10th place finish and that's where we ended up," said coach Dr. Michael Garrison. "We need to keep maturing and get our focus right for Regionals and IC4A/ECAC Championships."
Virginia walked away with the 2005 ACC title tallying 30 points, eight fewer than runner-up Florida State. The individual champion was senior Andrew Lemoncello of FSU, who finished in 23:43.10.
Maryland is off until Nov. 12 when the Terps head to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet. At last year's Regional qualifier, the squad finished 12th out of 23 teams.
