Hudson Taylor Named Recipient of Colonel Thomas M. Fields Award

Nov. 18, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland wrestler Hudson Taylor has been named this year's recipient of the Colonel Thomas M. Fields Award, the Terrapin Club announced recently.

The award is annually given to the Maryland student-athlete who displays outstanding leadership, scholarship and athletic excellence over the past year.

Taylor, currently the No. 2 wrestler in the nation at 197 pounds, has been consistently excellent athletically and academically throughout his Maryland career.

On the mat, Taylor was dominant last season, posting a 37-3 record with 18 pins. Taylor's season culminated with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, making him the program's first All-American since 1997 while being named the Atlantic Coast Conference's wrestler of the year.

The ACC champion at 197 pounds, Taylor was also named the conference's scholar athlete in wrestling. Taylor was named to the ACC and National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I all-academic teams.

Taylor's is carrying a 3.3 grade-point average in his major of Interactive Performance Art.

Off the mat and outside the classroom, Taylor has made a large impact, as well. Taylor is the vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is also a member of the University of Maryland Athletic Council. Taylor also volunteers in the Terrapin Enrichment Reading Program in which he travels to various elementary schools to encourage academic success by reading to individual classes.

Taylor is off to a hot start on the mat this season, winning all nine of his matches, six coming by fall.
