Jan. 31, 1998 North Carolina Overpowers MarylandCollege Park, MD -- The North Carolina Tarheels were at their best on Saturday and they left Marylandís Ritchie Coliseum with a 38-0 shutout of an injury-plagued Maryland team. The Terps, who were missing three starters, struggled in their opening matches as North Carolina pulled out to their commanding lead.With the Tarheels ahead 10-0 through the first three matches, Maryland seniors Shane Mack (Ithaca High School/Lancaster, PA) at 142 pounds and Jeff Whalen (Cedar Cliff High School/Camp Hill, PA) at 150, were poised to make a run for the Terps, but they were upset by JohnMark Bentley and Robert Lord respectively. Maryland's third captain, senior Craig Garrison (Pompton Lakes High School/ Pompton Lakes, NJ) lost a close match to Craig Bell at 177 pounds by a score of 3-2. The total difference between the three matches involving Marylandís senior tri-captains was only four points. Maryland falls to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the ACC as North Carolina improves to 6-4, 2-1 in the ACC. The Terrapins next meet will be in Charlottesville, Virginia on Friday, February 6 as they take on the University of Virginia. They will return to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the American University Invitational the following morning beginning at 9 a.m.
