Navy Wrestlers Get Revenge on Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy Midshipmen wrestling team avenged last season's 24-13 loss to Maryland with a 23-11 win over the Terps in front of 500 fans in Halsey Field House tonight. Navy started strong, with a pair of wins at 118 and 126 by sophomores Zane Stickel and Phil MacNaughton respectively, to take an early 6-0 lead. Maryland then responded by winning the next three matches, with wins by Ted Harlan at 134, Shane Mack at 142 and Jeff Whalen at 150, to take a 9-6 lead.

The Terps looked primed to extend the lead in the 158-pound match as Josh Weidman led Navy freshman Mark Newman, 4-3 and was up one point on riding time with less than two minutes remaining. In the final period though, Newman exploded for a takedown and near fall in the final moments and held on for a 10-5 win.

Navy then took three of the final four bouts, including a technical fall at 177 by Greg Gingeleskie, who is ranked eighth in the nation, a 7-5 come-from-behind win by senior captain Coleman Ruiz at 190 and a pin by heavyweight Colin Crickard.
