Jan. 28, 1998 Maryland Wrestlers Outmuscle George MasonCollege Park, MD -- In one of the most pivotal matches of the season, the Maryland wrestling team relied on its experience to overpower the George Mason Patriots, 32-9. Although Maryland starts four freshmen, the Terrapin senior tri-captains came up big with wins at crucial moments. After Shane Mack (Ithaca High School/Lancaster, PA) earned a 4-1 win at 142 pounds, Jeff Whalen (Cedar Cliff High School/Camp Hill, PA) pinned George Mason's Christian Devol two minutes into his match at 150 pounds and Craig Garrison (Pompton Lakes High School/Pompton Lakes, NJ) posted a decisive 5-0 victory at 177. For George Mason, junior Chris Mansueto began the dual meet with a hard fought 2-1 decision over Joe Guzzio at 118 pounds. Neil Johnson and Brad Ginn were the only other Patriot victories. With the score at 18-9, Maryland surged forward with wins by Garrison, junior Don Kukan (Kent County High School/Massey, MD) and a pinfall by senior heavyweight Dave Carter (Sherwood High School/Gaithersburg, MD) at 2:12. Maryland improves to 4-3 overall as George Mason falls to 2-3. The Terps will host the North Carolina Tarheels in Ritchie Coliseum at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31st.
