Jan. 24, 1998 N.C. State Holds Off Maryland, 22-16Raleigh, NC -- NC State won its second ACC match of the season with a 22-16 victory over Maryland today at Reynolds Coliseum, boosting the Wolfpack's record to 2-0 in the ACC and 5-5 overall. Maryland dropped to 0-1 in the league and 2-3 overall. Catapulted by a trio of wins in the opening weight classes, the Wolfpack built a healthy lead, but with the team score knotted at 16-16 heading into the final match, the hope of victory rested on the shoulders of the heavyweights. NC State sophomore Billy Blunt sealed the individual and team win with a fall over Dave Carter at 4:44. The meet-clinching match was set up by freshman Josh McClure, who earned the first collegiate "W" of his career and evened the team score at 16-all, winning 9-6 over Terp junior Don Kukan. For Maryland, tri captains Craig Garrison, Shane Mack, and Jeff Whalen each posted wins, while freshman Chad Masemer pinned Will Puckett at 4:20.
