Maryland Wrestlers Tune Up at Penn State Open

University Park, PA.- in its last tournament before Friday's season home opener, the Uiversity of Maryland sent a large contingent to the Penn State open on Sunday. Senior co-captain Jeff Whalen led the Terps with a second-place finish in the 150 pound weight class, while the other two captains, Shane Mack (142 lbs.) and Craig Garrison (177 lbs.) each reached eighth. Strong performances by Maryland came from freshmen Joe Guzzio, at 118 pounds, who reached the quarterfinals, and Brian Wilderman, who won three straight 158 pound matches after a tight first-round loss.

With twenty-five wrestlers competing, Maryland used the tournament to give many freshmen wrestlers some college action. Each wrestled a minimum of two matches.

The Terps reopen at old home on Friday night at Ritchie Coliseum in a dual meet with Coppin State and Howard. The match will begin at 6:00.
