Dec. 12, 1997 Terps Return to Ritchie Coliseum for Two WinsCOLLEGE PARK, Md - Led by two wins from senior co-captain Jeff Whalen (Cedar Cliff High School/Camp Hill, PA), the University of Maryland wrestling team opened its regular season with victories over Coppin State College, 31-9, and Howard University, 35-12 in the recently renovated Ritchie Coliseum. In the first match, versus Coppin State, Maryland captialized off of two forfeits and solid performances from Whalen, junior Ted Harlan (Haverford School/Glenmoore, PA) and freshmen Mark Mansueto (West Chester High School/West Chester, PA), and Chad Masemer (Littlestown High School/Littlestown, PA). Masemer won his first collegiate match with a powerful pin of Maurice Ashe two minutes into the contest. Against Howard, in the second meet, Maryland dominated the lower weights by winning five of the first six matches. The Terps recorded three pin falls--by co-captains Shane Mack (Ithaca High School, NY/Lancaster, PA) at 142 pounds and Craig Garrison (Pompton Lakes High School, Pompton Lakes, NJ) at 177; and a first Maryland win by heavyweight Dave Carter (Sherwood High School/ Gaithersbug, MD). Maryland improves its record to 2-0 on the season as the team begins preparation for the Midland & Wilkes Open on December 29th.
