#13 Terps Place Three at Midlands
Dec. 31, 2011
EVANSTON, Ill. - Fourth-seeded Christian Boley won four matches on the final day of the 49th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Friday to earn the bronze medal at 197 pounds to lead the Maryland wrestling team to a ninth-place finish with 51 points. Fifth-seeded Spencer Myers placed sixth at 285 and sixth-seeded Jimmy Sheptock finished seventh at 174.
"We finished on a high note today," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Christian [Boley] did a great job. His attitude made the difference."
After losing a one-point decision to fifth-seeded Ben Tate of Wartburg Thursday, Boley picked up three decisions before knocking off sixth-seeded Daniel Mitchell of American for the third time this season to win the third-place match.
"Jimmy [Sheptock] and Spencer [Myers] wrestled tough as well," said McCoy. "We have a lot to be proud of and some things to improve. It's our third year out of four finishing in the top-10. We had three placers again and five guys in the round of 12, all of it without Josh [Asper] and Shane [Gentry]."
Sheptock opened the consolation round with a 5-2 decision over fourth-seeded Greg Zanetti of Rutgers who is ranked 10th nationally. After losing a one-point decision to seventh-seeded John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo, Sheptock clinched seventh with a decisive 10-3 decision over Mikey England of Iowa State.
Iowa captured the team championship with 152 points while host Northwestern captured a tournament-high two individual titles to finish second.
The Terps return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 against the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown.
