Lehigh Tops No. 17 Maryland Wrestling, 21-15
Nov. 9, 2008
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Juniors Steven Bell and Hudson Taylor posted individual victories for the 17th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team, but the Terrapins dropped a 21-15 decision in a highly-anticipated dual meet at Lehigh and former Maryland head coach Pat Santoro Sunday afternoon. Lehigh's John McDonald got the Mountain Hawks (1-0) off to a good start, earning a high-scoring decision at 125 pounds against Brendan Byrne, 9-8. The Terps (1-2-1) then posted back-to-back decisions to take a 6-3 lead. No. 12 Bell upended No. 20 Matt Fisk at 133 pounds, 7-2, and Alex Krom beat No. 20 Seth Ciasulli, 4-1, at 141 pounds. The Mountain Hawks regained the lead with a decision from No. 15 Trevor Chinn over No. 14 Eric Medina, 8-6, before Kyle John posted his first win of the season at 157 pounds, knocking off Sean Bilodeau, 9-6, to give Maryland a 9-6 lead midway through the meet. Unfortunately for Maryland, the second half of the meet belonged to Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks took four of five matches. Mike Galante won an 8-4 decision against Brian Letters to tie the score and No. 13 Alex Caruso took a 5-3 decision from a game Corey Peltier at 174 pounds, putting the Hawks up for good, 12-9. Lehigh's David Craig pinned Ryan Gray in 1:53 to double up the Terps, 18-9, with only two matches remaining.
No. 2 Taylor answered Craig, however, pinning Joe Kennedy in 4:30 to give the Terps a chance heading into the heavyweight bout, down three at 18-15. Needing a decision to force a draw or a major decision or better to win, Patrick Gilmore came up just short, losing a 5-3 decision to Zach Rey to give the Mountain Hawks the 21-15 victory. Maryland doesn't compete in another dual until the Northeast Duals November 29 in Guilderland, N.Y. LEHIGH 21, No. 17 MARYLAND, 15 -TERPS- |
