Wrestling Goes 2-1 At Fighting Scot Duals

EDINBORO, Pa. - Sophomores Stephen Bell, No. 7 Mike Letts, and No. 8 Hudson Taylor all went a perfect 3-0 as the Maryland wrestling team went 2-1 in its first action of the 2007-08 season at the Fighting Scot Duals hosted by No. 16 Edinboro. The Terrapins beat Army and Mercyhurst before losing to Edinboro in the feature match. Maryland defeated Army in its first match of the day, 26-13, and then handled Mercyhurst, 30-15. Edinboro narrowly escaped an upset by the Terps with a 19-15 victory. Bell impressed in his first time in the Maryland lineup at 133 pounds as he beat Army's William Simpson, 16-10 and then pinned Mercyhurst's Joey McCullough in 2:32. He finished the day with a 5-2 decision against Edinboro's Ricky Deubel. Letts opened the season at 174 pounds with a 15-0 technical fall which he completed in seven minutes against Dean Gaier of Army. He handled Josh Shields with a 14-5 major decision and then beat No. 17 Phil Moricone, 5-3, in his finale. Taylor started 2007-08 right where he left off last season by pinning his first two opponents at 197 pounds. The first came against Nick Parisi of Army in 1:51 and then he took care of Mercyhurst's Trevor Gall in 4:08. Taylor finished the meet with a 6-4 decision over the Fighting Scots' Pat Bradshaw. No. 20 Charlie Pinto and redshirt sophomore Mike McGill both went 2-0 at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively. Pinto won by technical fall in his first match, an 18-1 trouncing of Braxdon Scaletta from Mercyhurst. McGill was impressive after moving up a weight class in the offseason, winning both matches by decision.
Freshman Brian Letters went 2-1 in his opening weekend with the Terps with both wins coming by decision. Classmate Eric Medina also recorded a pair of wins, which including a pin of Army's Ryan Nye in just 39 seconds in the first match of his career.
