Black Tops Red in Season Kickoff

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Behind pins from Josh Asper and Jimmy Sheptock Black defeated Red, 36-12, Saturday afternoon in the Black & Red Wrestle-Offs at Comcast Pavilion. The meet, which serves as the kickoff to the season for the Maryland wrestling team, featured nine matches to determine the Terps' starters for next weekend's Terrapin Duals.
Asper, who begins the season ranked No. 3 at 174 pounds, earned his pin 5:44 into the match. Not to be outdone, Sheptock, who begins the season ranked No. 10 at 184 pounds, followed Asper and picked up his pin 53 seconds into the match to put Black in control.
Shane Gentry got Red on the board first with a 7-2 decision over Paul O'Neill at 125 pounds. But Frank Goodwin responded for Black with a strong third period in which Goodwin scored six points en route to a 7-2 decision over Danny O'Malley at 141 pounds.
Black won the next two matches with decisions for Shyheim Brown, in a 141-pound exhibition against Derrick Evanovich, and Lou Mascola at 149. Brady Massaro cut Red's deficit to three points at 9-6 with a third-period takedown to win a 3-2 decision over Domenic DeRobertis at 157.
After Josh Snook and Tyler Manion earned decisions for Black, Ben Dorsay pinned Sean O'Malley to cut Black's lead to 15-12. But Asper and Sheptock followed with pins of their own to seize the match for Black.
In the final three matches of the day, Christian Boley scored four third-period points to defeat Ty Snook at 197, Dylan Devine knocked off Chris Jastrzebski in a 197-pound exhibition match, and Dallas Brown eked out a 1-0 decision over Carl Buchholz at heavyweight.
Maryland begins its season Sunday, Nov. 4 with the Terrapins Duals. The Terps take on Johns Hopkins at 11 a.m., West Virginia at 12:30 p.m. and Kutztown at 2 p.m.
