Two Wrestlers Qualify for NCAA Wrestling Tournament
March 9, 1998 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior co-captains Shane Mack and Jeff Whalen qualified for the NCAA Tournament with strong performances at the ACC Tournament this past weekend. Whalen, at 150 pounds, qualified by reaching the finals of the tournament and Mack earned a wild card spot after finishing third at 142 lbs. For Whalen, it will be his second trip to the NCAA Tournament. This season, he took first place at both the Millersville Invitational and the Congressional Cup. He twice earned the ACC Performer of the Week award. This will be Mackis third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. His finish at the ACCs marks his fourth consecutive third place finish. Highlights from the season include a 9-2 dual record and a second place finish at the Millersville Invitational. At the conclusion of the ACC season, Whalen improves his record to 28-7 and Mack goes to the NCAAs at 22-9. Cleveland State will host the NCAA Tournament beginning on March 19.
