RICHMOND, Va. - Maryland wrestlers Shyheim Brown and Spencer Myers placed second at 141 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively, at the National Collegiate Open at the Arthur Ashe Center on Sunday earning All-American honors in the process.
En route to the 141-pound title, Brown won two matches by decision, recorded a pin and won one by a medical forfeit. Myers won two decisions and also recorded a pin to reach the 285-pound title match.
Brown opened the tournament with a fall over Navy's Josh Miller. The freshman got the pin with 27 seconds left in the second period. He followed up with a 6-1 decision over Ryan Mosley of Gardner-Webb before advancing to the semifinals with a medical forfeit over Iowa State's Luke Goetti.
In the semifinals, Brown met up with Central Michigan's Sam Hanau. Brown shutout Hanau and advanced to the finals with a 6-0 decision. In a close 141-pound title bout, Brown lost a 3-2 decision to Tyler Small of Kent State.
Myers, who won titles at the F&M Open and Wilkes Open earlier this season, was as equally dominant in reaching the 285-pound title match. Myers pinned Lock Haven's Cody Mason 1:36 into the match and won a 4-2 decision over Kent State's Mimmo Itle in the quarterfinals.
Myers advanced to the finals with a 9-3 decision over Appalachian State's Denzel Dejournette. Myers lost to NC State's Nick Gwiazdowski in the championship on injury default.
