#17 Terps Knock Off Blue Devils
Feb. 12, 2012
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On senior night, 19th-ranked senior Kyle John finished his career in style with a major decision to lead the 17th-ranked Maryland wrestling team to a 22-12 defeat of Duke at Comcast Pavilion.
Head coach Kerry McCoy used a senior-laden lineup in the squad's final home meet of the season as the Terps clinched a share of the regular-season ACC title. Prior to the match, the Terps honored seniors Matt Bogusz, Joey Boone, Ryan Gray, John, Brian Marcoux, Shawn Mazzarone, Corey Peltier and Owen Smith for their commitment and dedication to the program over the last four years.
"It's great to be the [ACC] champs," McCoy said. "Right now, we'll enjoy being the regular-season champs, but then winning the tournament is the next goal."
After falling in the opening match, Maryland (14-1, 4-1 ACC) rebounded with a pivotal 7-6 decision by Boone at 133 pounds.
"My match got close there at the end, but I'm glad I picked my head up and stuck it out," Boone said. "I haven't really had the chance to wrestle because I've been hurt so bad, so I'm really happy that I got to have one last shot to wrestle a match for the Terps."
Duke responded with a win at 141, but a forfeit victory for sophomore Ben Dorsay at 149 set the stage for John to provide the Terps some breathing room.
John went to work quickly in the first period. The Coopersburg, Pa., native scored a takedown and 2-point near-fall following an escape to take a 5-3 lead into the second period. John added his third takedown of the match early in the third period and closed with another 2-point near-fall to secure bonus points for the Terps.
The Blue Devils (3-7, 0-4) stayed within striking distance by sandwiching decisions at 165 and 184 around Smith's 4-1 victory at 174.
Fifth-ranked Christian Boley sealed the win for the Terps with a 7-3 decision over Brian Self at 197, and Gray concluded his Maryland career with a 9-4 decision over Robert Mello.
The Terrapins will complete their regular season with a dual meet at George Mason on Feb., 16 at 7:30 p.m.
