Injuries Hamper Terps in Wrestlings Congressional Cup
Feb. 7, 1998 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Terps traveled into Washington, D.C. today for the first annual Congressional Cup at American University's Bender Arena. In the tournament, which featured many of the nation's top programs including Nebraska and West Virginia, Maryland finished in 7th place. Due to injuries, the Terps were left with multiple holes in their lineup, but senior co-captain Jeff Whalen stepped up to win the 150-pound division. Whalen decisioned Nebraska's Ryan Bauer by a score of 3-1 in the championship match. The Cornhuskers finished in first place with 110.5 points as Hofstra--with 53.5 and West Virginia at 50.5 rounded out the top three spots. The Terps posted 27 points. Maryland returns to Ritchie Coliseum next weekend, February 14 and 15th, when they host the Duke Blue Devils and American Eagles respectively. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
