As a Senior (2011-12): Went 4-2 at 174 pounds and 2-0 in dual meets...earned his first career ACC dual win over Duke's Randy Roden (2/12)...closed the year with a 3-1 decision over George Mason's Steve Swayze (2/16).
As a Junior (2010-11): Went 3-7 at 174 and 184 pounds...opened the season with 11-5 victory over McDaniel's Scott Forrester at the Terrapin Duals.
As a Sophomore (2009-10): Went 10-13 at 174 pounds, mostly in open competition ... the starter at 174 pounds for seven matches ... went 4-1 at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl on Nov. 14 to finish third.
As a Freshman (2008-09): Went 3-6 overall at 184 pounds, seeing action as part-time starter in dual meets.
Before Maryland: Lettered four years in wrestling for the Cardinals ... state champion at 171 pounds as a senior, going 36-4 ... also placed at state championships as freshman and sophomore ... all county all three years ... all-American as a senior ... was a team captain for three years ... coached youth wrestling at Maryland Mean Machine.
Personal: Owen Hugh Smith ... son of Sean and Deborah Smith ... father played football and was an All-American in lacrosse at Swarthmore ... enjoys surfing and shark-fishing ... also recruited by Bloomsburg, Clarion, McDaniel, Duke, Franklin and Marshall ... chose Maryland for the academics and athletics ... majoring in criminal justice.
