Guzzio Qualifies for All-America

Whalen Stays in Wrestlebacks for Terps

CEDAR FALLS, La. - James "The Guzzler" Guzzio qualified himself as an All-American this afternoon at the NCAA Championships. He defeated Erik Smith of Appalachian State 3-2 to advance to the semifinals of the 134-pound bracket. By reaching the semifinals, he as automatically qualified for All-America.

In the 142-pound bracket, Terrapin junior Shane Mack was eliminated by falling to Kasey Gilliss of Iowa 17-7. Mack did win in the first round of the consolation bracket by defeating Slippery Rock's Chris Elliott last night 10-3.

Junior Jeff Whalen stayed alive this afternoon by defeating Pittsburgh's Kevin Johnson in the second round of the 150-pound consolation tournament 8-3. He will face Drew Pariano of Northwestern later this afternoon.

Senior Arash Alizadeh was eliminated from the 15-pound consolation bracket this afternoon, dropping a 5-3 decision to Bryon Tucker of Oklahoma. He defeated Cal State Bakersfield's Andy Varner 11-3 in his first-round consolation match.

Senior Damon Stephens was eliminated from the 158-pound bracket last night when he was pinned by Brad Alderman of Wyoming.
