Dec. 4, 1997 1997-98 SEASON OUTLOOKAfter finishing last season with an 11-3 overall record, the wrestling program hopes to continue its success this winter. Highlighting last year's record-breaking season was All-American James "The Guzzler" Guzzio, who was named the 1997 ACC Wrestler of the Year. His remarkable feats included a second ACC Championship at the 134 pound weight class and a fifth place finish at the NCAA tournament. In addition, four other Terps headed to the NCAAs, including Arash Alizadeh (158 lbs.), Damon Stephens (167 lbs.), Shane Mack (142 lbs.) and Jeff Whalen (150 lbs.). With Whalen and Mack teaming alongside Craig Garrison as the tri-captains for this season's squad, the foundation for the team includes their knowledge, returning talent and a strong recruiting class. Citing this off-season as one of the most successful recruiting periods in his coaching career, Coach John McHugh sees a bright future for the program. With the emergence of all three captains last year, depth at many key weight classes and talented red-shirt freshmen, the roster is filled with experience. The strong point in the Terrapin lineup is in the middle where Mack, Whalen, Garrison and freshman Josh Weidman will fill the spots. All three of this year's captains claimed third place in their respective divisions in the 1997 ACC Championships. For Mack, it was his third time placing in the tournament. Veterans Ted Harlan, Donnie Kukan, Zack Fowl, Ben Tomaino and Scott Herfel are expected to step into the other open weight classes and make an impact. Although many positions are very strong, the loss of three NCAA qualifiers and two starters has opened some holes for Maryland. Looking to step forward are many solid performers including newcomer and senior Dave Carter in the heavyweight division, Zack Fowl at 118, Robert Takseraas at 126 and numerous freshmen. While the Terps lost their two high-weight starters, the depth at the top two positions is still very strong. Names such as Kukan, Tony Serianni, Jule Dolci and Paul Fitzmaurice make the loss much easier. In addition to experience from other wrestlers, the new recruits such as Weidman, Joe Guzzio, Brandon York, Mark Mansueto and Chad Masemer will add additional depth in most key divisions. Look for the team to surprise many schools this winter.
