Dec. 7, 2010
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Andy Magee has agreed to join the Maryland men's tennis team for spring play. The California native will enter Maryland with a very impressive resume and will provide versatility to the team. Magee was a standout on the prep circuit and was a member of the 2004 USTA Junior World Championship team. In 2005, he was ranked as high as fifth in the nation by the USTA as he reached the quarterfinals of the USTA Nationals at Kalamazoo, Mich. The coaching staff is thrilled to have a player with experience and all-around athleticism such as Magee's. "Andy has a high tennis IQ. He is a winner, and that goes back to being successful in the world's most competitive junior events," head coach Kyle Spencer said. "Andy will make an immediate impact on our team and in our quest to develop a nationally elite program." A standout at Chadwick High School (Calif.), Magee played quarterback and threw for 2,887 yards and 22 touchdowns. Magee passed for 3,713 yards and 50 touchdowns while being named to the all-state, All Southern-Cal, All CIF and All-Area teams. Spencer calls Magee's football career "unique and a testament to his athletic ability and his work ethic." Magee previously attended both UCLA and Arizona State. Magee will have three years of eligibility remaining.
