COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's tennis team heads to Charlottesville, Va., for the third time this season to compete in the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships set to begin Thursday afternoon. The event is one of 12 tournaments being held throughout the country.
Junior Jesse Kiuru enters the tournament with a 7-1 record and a six-match win streak, having captured a singles championship last weekend at the UVa Classic. Kiuru will look to continue the winning ways along with freshman Vlad Stefan who is 6-1 and won a singles title at the UVa Ranked +1 tournament earlier this season.
The tournament begins Thursday at noon with singles qualifying action. Sophomore Jan Surovic will be part of a 32-player qualifying bracket with eight individuals advancing to the main draw. Surovic will face Edward Becker of Longwood in the round of 32. Should Surovic advance, he will meet the winner of the match between Richmond's Dylan Trent and George Mason's Scott Keaton.
Singles main draw action will begin Friday. The Terps earned eight spots in the draw led by fourth-seeded senior Maros Horny.
In the main doubles draw, Maryland has entered four teams into the tournament. Horny and junior John Collins is the top seed in the bracket. Doubles competition begins Friday at 2:30 p.m.
