Maryland Men's Tennis Closes Play at the 2008 Wilson ITA Mideast Regional Championship

Oct. 18, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Maryland men's tennis players competing in the 2008 Wilson ITA Mideast Regional Championship all experienced success against ACC opponents, before being eliminated from the tournament held in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Freshman Mattias Sarrazin earned a win at singles against Clemson's Kevin Fleck, 7-6, 7-5. But the tiebreaker and the match didn't go Sarrazin's way in the second round, as he lost to No. 17 seed Maciek Sykut of FSU, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

The doubles team of senior Nickolai Nielsen and junior David Kwon found success in the opening round against UNC's Zach Hunter and Brennan Boyajian, 8-4.

In the round of 32 the pair of Terps faced Chris Price and Torsten Wietoska of Duke, who knocked off the No. 6 seed in the first round. Kwon and Nielsen played a strong match, but in the end fell, 8-5.

Nielsen lost a close three set match in the opening round of singles competition as he fell to Eastern Tennessee State's Charles Bottoni, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Kwon also lost a tough match as he was defeated by Virginia Tech's Luka Somen, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

The Terps' next action comes November 6-9 when Maryland closes out its Fall schedule with players competing in both the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. and the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
