Stefan Set to Play in ITA Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Vlad Stefan earned a spot in the singles quarterfinals and the Maryland doubles team of senior Maros Horny and junior John Collins advanced to the semifinals Sunday at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships. Stefan dispatched of Old Dominion's Chris Muzalewski 7-5, 6-3 to set up a matchup with 15th-seeded Jaime Whiteford of William and Mary at 10 a.m. Monday. In doubles action, Horny and Collins picked up three victories Sunday including an 8-6 victory over Virginia's Santiago Villegas and Justin Shane to advance to a semifinal matchup with sixth-seeded Ugur Atalay and Francisco Dias of George Washington. "I'm happy for Vlad who has continued to improve this fall, and I'm looking forward to see how he handles tomorrow's matches," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "John and Maros have competed well in doubles while not always playing their best. Tomorrow provides us with another chance to compete at a high level." In round of 16 singles action, Horny lost to Viktor Svensson of George Washington. Junior Tommy Laine fell to fifth-seeded Julen Uriguen of Virginia in three sets. Sixth-seeded Justin Shane of Virginia knocked out junior Sergio Wyss, and junior David Nguyen lost to George Washington's Dias.
In other doubles action, junior Andy Magee and Stefan as well as Laine and junior Jesse Kiuru advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out. Sophomore Jan Surovic and Wyss lost in the round of 32. |
