#28 Seminoles Knock Off Terps
March 30, 2012
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's tennis team earned three wins in singles, but it was not enough to defeat No. 28 Florida State Friday afternoon at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts. The Seminoles won the doubles point and held off the Terps in singles action to win 4-3.
The Seminoles gained the early advantage with an upset victory at No. 1 doubles and took the doubles point with a victory at No. 3. Junior Tommy Laine and freshman Vlad Stefan wrapped up doubles with a tiebreak victory over Dominic Coltrone and Anderson Reed.
The Terps (4-12, 1-5 ACC) started singles in strong fashion. Senior Maros Horny dispatched of Jordan Kelly-Houston in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 to tie the match.
Victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles pulled Florida State within one point of the win, but Stefan kept the Terps alive with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Blake Davis at the No. 2 position. It is Stefan's second consecutive win and seventh of the spring season.
After battling Benjamin Lock to a first-set tiebreaker, senior Mathias Sarrazin fell in the second set at No. 6 singles as the Seminoles clinched the win.
At No. 5, Laine picked up a shortened three-set win over Jason Zafiros to end the afternoon.
