Terps Fall to Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Maryland men's tennis team started strong with three doubles victories, but Purdue responded with wins at the top four singles positions to defeat the Terps 4-3 Saturday at Schwartz Tennis Center. The afternoon started well for No. 58 Maryland (3-6, 0-2 ACC). At No. 2 doubles, junior Tommy Laine and freshman Vlad Stefan dispatched of Diego Acosta and Mark Kovacs, 8-5. Juniors Andy Magee and Jesse Kiuru knocked off Pawel Pozlomski and Krisztian Krocsko at No .3, and 36th-ranked senior Maros Horny and John Collins closed it out at No. 1. The momentum carried over to the start of singles play as Laine and Kiuru won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. But the Boilermakers won the last four matches of the afternoon to take the win. After Purdue picked up wins at No.2, 3, 4, the match came down to No. 1 singles. Horny, ranked 91st, won the opening set 6-2 against Szymon Tatarczyk. Tatarczyk returned the favor with a 6-3 victory in the second set . The final set went to a tiebreaker with Tatarczyk prevailing 7-5. The Terps are in action at noon Sunday against Notre Dame in South Bend. Purdue 4, No. 58 Maryland 3 Singles
