Maryland Splits Friday at Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Maryland men's tennis team split its matches Friday at the HEB Tournament of Champions, defeating Western Michigan, 4-1, before falling to BYU, 4-0. The 45th-ranked Terps (9-3) knocked off the Broncos (6-7) in the opening round of the eight-team tournament behind singles wins from John Collins, Tommy Laine and Jesse Kiuru. Maryland was not as fortunate in the semifinals against the 50th-ranked Cougars (8-4) who won at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles to secure the win. BYU snapped a five-match winning streak for the Terrapins who had won two of their last three against teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. Laine had his seven-match winning streak come to an end with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to BYU's Thomas Shubert at No. 5 singles. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, which is serving as host to the two-day event, will play BYU in the Saturday's finals. The Islanders knocked off Purdue in the other semifinal game. The Terps will play the Boilermakers at 9 a.m. CST Saturday for third place.
