March 4, 2010
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryand men's tennis team posted its sixth straight victory, including back-to-back shutouts, with a dominating 7-0 win over the Navy Midshipmen (4-8) Thursday afternoon. The freshmen Finnish tandem of Tommy Laine and Jesse Kiuru once again led the way with wins in both singles and doubles for the Terps (10-2). Laine improved to 12-0 in dual matches by downing Navy's Owen Bullard 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Laine made his debut this week in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings, entering the list at No. 122. His win over Bullard clinched the match after the Terps raced out to a 3-0 lead by capturing the doubles point and gaining singles wins from John Collins and Mathias Sarrazin, at the No. 4 and 6 positions, respectively. Collins' 6-1, 6-1 win over Zach Nicholson improved his dual record to 11-1. Kiuru has the same spring mark after outlasting Marcus Rebersak 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 2 singles. Collins and Sarrazin clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Navy's Nick Birger and Ramsey Lemaich. Laine and Kiuru notched an 8-3 win over Bullard and Eddie Konrad at the No. 1 position and are now 10-2 in dual doubles matches. The Terps, who knocked off Morgan State, 7-0, last Sunday, will look to continue the winning streak on Sunday when they play host to Delaware State and St. Mary's (Md.). The Delaware State match begins at 10:45 a.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park, followed at 1 p.m. by the St. Mary's tilt.
