Terps Close Weekend with Victory
Feb. 19, 2011
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 63rd-ranked Maryland men's tennis team improved its record to 6-2 by defeating the Radford Highlanders 4-3 on Saturday. The Terps never trailed in the match, but were able to withstand a late surge by the Highlanders. Tommy Laine, playing in the No. 6 singles, secured the victory for the Terrapins. Laine, who went 4-0 in singles and doubles matches on the weekend, was able to defeat Radford's Stijn Meulemans in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The victory improved Laine's dual singles record to 7-1 on the season. Laine also partnered with Jesse Kiuru to defeat the Highlander's tandem of Igor Ogrizek and Nicholas Sayer, 8-3, en route to Maryland winning the doubles point. John Collins, who moved into the No. 2 singles spot for the first time this season, defeated Radford's Joe Mills, 6-3, 6-4. Collins also went 4-0 in his matches this weekend. Head coach Kyle Spencer was pleased with the team's effort, but knows there is room for improvement. "We had a great weekend," said Spencer. "We didn't play our best, but the guys fought hard and were competitive in both matches. We beat two good teams this weekend. Both are likely NCAA Tournament teams." The Terps will need to continue with their high level of play when travel to face Boston College on Wednesday. The match will begin at 5 p.m. "We're looking forward to getting back into conference action," Spencer said. "We have an important one coming up against BC."
