Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep American

COLLEGE Park, Md. -- Junior Kim Piotro (Mesa, Ariz.) and freshmen Kevin Burke (Cabin John, Md) and Courtenay Miller (Spokane, Wash.) all broke school records, leading the University of Maryland swimming and diving teams to a sweep of American University in the final meet ever at Cole Field House Pool.

The men's team (4-0) defeated American (0-5) 189-21 while the women (4-0) defeated the Eagles (0-5) 171.5-63.5.

Piotro broke her own school record in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.85), topping the old mark by .14 seconds. She later returned to break the school record in the 100-yard freestyle (51.21), beating the old mark by .22 seconds. In addition, Piotro and teammates Katy Novotny (Bel Air, Md.), Alison Shea (Ontario, Canada) and Sarah Solomon (Silver Spring, Md.) also broke the school record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.49), eclipsing the old mark by .10 seconds).

Burke broke the school record in the men's one-meter diving competition (337.125 points), breaking the previous top score by 6.48 points. Miller broke the school record in the women's three-meter diving event (326.925 points), shattering the old mark by 26.52 points.

The Terps will next swim against George Washington on January 14 in the first meet at the new Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
