Maryland Sweeps Johns Hopkins in Swimming and Diving

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshmen Kevin Burke (Cabin John, Md.) and Courtenay Miller (Belvue, Wa.), and senior Heather Wilson (Portland, Ore) all won two individual events, leading the University of Maryland swimming and diving teams to a sweep of Johns Hopkins today at the Cole Field House Pool. The men (1-0) beat the visiting Blue Jays 140-38 while the women (1-0) won 169-26.

Burke won the men's one-meter and three meter diving competitions with scores of 292.88 and 322.95 respectively. Miller won the same two events in the women's competition, posting scores of 257.55 and 290.10. Both Burke and Miller's scores met the qualifying standard for February's Regional Diving Championships.

Wilson, meanwhile, captured both the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.50) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:38.03).

In other events, freshman Ryan Walker (Havertown, Pa.) broke the Cole Field House Pool record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:00.35. The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Katy Novotny (Bel Air, Md.), Alison Shea (Ontario, Canada), Sarah Solomon (Silver Spring, Md.) and Kim Piotro (Mesa, Az.) also set the Pool record with a time of 1:47.15.

Maryland's next meet will be at N.C. State on November 7, starting at 7:00 p.m.
