Burke Wins Men's ACC One-Meter Diving Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshman diver Kevin Burke (Cabin John, Md.) won the men's one-meter diving event at the men's ACC Swimming & Diving Championships tonight at Virginia. He becomes the first Maryland athlete to win an individual event at the ACC meet since Mike Noonan won the 50-yard freestyle in 1994.

Burke's score of 538.20 points was 26.45 points better than runner-up Andy Johnson of N.C. State. It also broke the Maryland school record of 517.00 points which was set by Janika Biyanilla in 1987.

Burke is favored to also win the three-meter diving event, which begins tomorrow and concludes on Saturday. Should he complete the sweep, he would become the first Maryland diver to win both events since Mike Noonan in 1991.

With two days left in the ACC Championships, Maryland is in sixth place out of eight teams with 100.5 points. Defending champion North Carolina leads the competition with 212.5 points.
